New data illustrates the effect of time on hard drive failure rates End-shutdown

SSDs have usurped hard disk drives (HDDs) when it comes to performance, but whether you’re building network-attached storage (NAS) or have high-capacity needs on a budget, many people still rely on them. the turntables. However, older drives that have seen a lot of use may not be as reliable as they once were. data rollback shared this week highlights how the average failure rate (AFR) of a hard drive can increase over time.

Since 2013, Backblaze, a cloud storage and backup company, has published an annual report analyzing the AFRs of hard drives in its data center. the report 2022 shared Tuesday examines 230,921 hard drives across 29 models from HGST, Seagate, Toshiba and WDC, with capacities ranging from 4TB to 16TB. All models included at least 60 drives that had not been previously used for testing.

Note that the sample group only consists of drives that Backblaze had on hand, and they are all different ages, with some being used for more days than others. However, the Backblaze report gives us a unique insight into the results of long-term hard drive usage.

In case you need a reminder of the morbid nature of time, the Backblaze report shows evidence that the AFR of hard drives increases with age. That’s not surprising news, but Backblaze is providing the data to paint a picture of what it looks like.

Backblaze’s analysis of their findings says that the graph below “shows that older drives, when grouped by size, fail more frequently.”

Note that the 6TB and 10TB samples only included one drive model each, while the rest have at least four each.

Backblaze noted that an increase in AFR as an HDD ages aligns with the bathtub curve, where failures tend to be higher by breaking free before falling, leveling off, and then increasing as the product ages. Backblaze said the average failure rate for its hard drives was 1.01 percent in 2021 and 1.37 percent in 2022.

“The aging of our HDD fleet seems the most logical reason for the AFR increase in 2022. We could dig deeper, but that’s probably moot at this point,” the Backblaze blog said.

All drives in this chart have at least 1 million days of use over their lifetime.

The oldest hard drive (average age 92.5 months) tested by Backblaze was a 6TB Seagate (ST6000DX000). Its AFR was 0.11 percent in 2021 and 0.68 percent in 2022. Backblaze said this was “a very respectable number at any point, but especially after almost eight years.”

Seagate, followed by Toshiba, topped Backblaze’s table that groups AFRs by vendor, but most of Seagate’s drives are much older than the rest of the drives tested.

“In general, Seagate drives are less expensive and their failure rates tend to be higher in our environment,” Backblaze said. “However, their failure rates are typically not high enough to make them less profitable over their lifetime. It could be argued that many Seagate drive models are just as profitable to us as more expensive drives” .

C.Omcast Corporation. It is no longer accepting new subscribers to the free version of its Peacock streaming service, the latest sign that big media companies are trying to squeeze more money from their forays into online TV.

The service, which features original programming as well as content from the company’s NBC television network and movie studio Universal, launched to great fanfare in mid-2020. To set itself apart from rivals Netflix, Disney+ and others, Peacock introduced three levels, including a free ad-supported version.

Comcast said last week that its service losses will peak at $3 billion this year. Still, Peacock is gaining momentum. The service added 5 million paying subscribers in the fourth quarter, bringing its total to 20 million.

Pleco cleaning robot uses rotating brushes to clean dust from solar panels

blade ranger

Every day, dust settles on thousands of square kilometers of solar panels around the world, reducing the amount of electricity they produce. A robot designed by an Israeli start-up can autonomously clean rooftop solar panels that other cleaning robots can’t access, boosting the panels’ electricity generation by up to 15 percent.

Autonomous robots are widely used to clean large-scale solar panels on the ground. Many work sliding down rails to clean dust, birds…

Check out these emulated calculators at the Internet Archive End-shutdown

I never thought that I would really have fun with a calculator emulator. But here I am, playing around with the old-school graphing calculators that the The Internet Archive has been freed from its plastic chassis and put into digital form for all to enjoy.

Internet Archive calls this new collection Calculator Drawer. There are 14 calculators to choose from, including the HP 48GX, TI-82, TI-83 Plus, and even the Electronic Number Muncher, which is an ’80s-era toy calculator. Internet Archive doesn’t just emulate the interface of each device; it incorporates your physical layout and buttons, making it feel like you have the actual device right in front of you.

The Internet Archive goes into more detail about how this all works. in a blog post. use the MAME illustration system to power their calculators, a branch of the open source framework that recreates classic arcade games on various systems, which is how the Internet Archive managed to incorporate actual footage of the calculators into the emulations.

As the Internet Archive noted, MAME “has two different ways of rendering an emulated device that needs ‘extra’ drawing to augment the part of itself that reflects the device’s screen or lights.” While the MAME system can create a vector-based drawing of the buttons and screen, the MAME artwork system replaces these drawings with a real image.

With these emulations, you can click buttons to enter numbers and functions, just as you would if you physically pressed a button on the calculator with your finger. While you can also use your keyboard to type numbers, it’s a bit more limiting since you can’t seem to enter any functions. Some of the devices, like the HP 48G+They even have sound, which is a nice touch. And if you need a refresher on how to use these calculators, the Internet Archive even uploaded a collection of original user manual.

While I don’t have a personal history with any of these devices, it’s still great to have the chance to try them out without physically touching them. I have great memories with my TI-84 Plus in high school and college, which allowed me to avoid learning factoring by just programming it to do the equations for me.

The trailer for ‘Daisy Jones & The Six’ sounds and gets dirty End-shutdown

0

Based on the bestselling book by Taylor Jenkins Reid, daisy jones and the six chronicles a Fleetwood Mac-esque band from obscurity to dominance and implosion. The 10-episode miniseries stars Riley Keough as Daisy and Sam Claflin as romantic foil/creative partner Billy Dunne, the charming one-two punch behind a 1970s rock group that burns instead of fading.

Here’s the official Prime Video synopsis:

“In 1977, Daisy Jones & The Six were on top of the world. Fronted by two charismatic singers, Daisy Jones and Billy Dunne, the band had risen from obscurity to fame. And then, after a sold-out show at Chicago’s Soldier Field, they called it quits. Now, decades later, the gang members finally agree to reveal the truth. This is the story of how an iconic band imploded at the height of their powers.”

The show was adapted for television by duo Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber (500 days of summer) and looks like a mixture of almost famous and the documentary style of The last Dance. You can almost see Daisy saying “And I took it personally.”

Happily, the backing melodies meet the moment. Not a huge surprise considering they hired Marcus Mumford, Phoebe Bridgers, Blake Mills, Jackson Browne, and more to write and record for the fictional band.

daisy jones and the six hits Prime Video on March 3, and they even have an album that blurs the lines between fact and fiction.
